The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) was established in 2018 through an executive proclamation by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. Its creation marked a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s educational reform efforts. Prior to this, all matters relating to technical, vocational, and higher education were administered under a single body, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The formation of MTHE represented a strategic decision to provide dedicated leadership, clearer focus, and stronger governance for the nation’s rapidly evolving tertiary and vocational education sectors.
As a ministry, we are committed to advancing a system that empowers learners, strengthens institutions, and aligns educational outcomes with national development goals. We believe that quality education is essential for economic growth, social progress, and long-term national transformation.
Our mission is simple yet powerful: to promote access to quality tertiary and vocational education through appropriate policies for the development of education in Sierra Leone.
